WHEN MY LATE sister-in-law Ann Jenkins Lindemulder returned to Cambridge, Mass., after five years in what was then called Burma, she brought back a number of souvenirs. These included a bronze Karen tribal drum, an enormous round teakwood dining table, one more child than she had set out with and a recipe for Burmese kaukswe. The child grew up, the dining table developed an irreparable crack, Burma became Myanmar, but the recipe lives on in our family.
